How to design an album cover

Create a simple album cover layout with one focal image, restrained text, and a square format ready for digital release.

Album covers give you more freedom than most platform graphics, but they still benefit from structure. A strong cover usually feels deliberate, not crowded.

Step 1: Define the mood before the layout

Choose a direction first:

  • minimal and quiet
  • bold and graphic
  • photographic and intimate
  • textured and atmospheric

Once the mood is clear, design decisions become easier.

Step 2: Start with the square format

Open Album Cover Maker so your composition grows inside the right shape from the beginning.

Step 3: Use one dominant image or type move

Album art often becomes weaker when it splits attention between too many visuals. One strong photo, symbol, or text treatment usually travels better.

Step 4: Treat text as part of the composition

The artist name and title should either clearly lead the layout or intentionally stay secondary. Avoid placing them in awkward leftover spaces.

Step 5: Leave some mystery

You do not need to explain the whole project on the cover. If the artwork creates a distinct feeling and stays memorable, it is already doing the main job.

Step 6: Check it in small and large sizes

Good album art should hold up both as a full-size visual and as a tiny square thumbnail. If it only works when enlarged, simplify the design.
